12 Sundays of Christmas - Week 8
On the 8th Sunday of Christmas, Sharon shared with me... an Impossible Box. I first discovered Julie DiMateo's Impossible Boxes two years ago. The one I saw was sized to fit a personal hand sanitizer from Bath & Body. This year, I decided to resize the pattern to fit a tube of hand cream. The finished measurements of this box is 2-1/4" x 1-1/4" x 5". It holds a 2 oz tube of hand cream (this Jergen's one fits, as does a 2 oz tube of Udderly Smooth hand cream). I recommend measuring before buying...I'm sure you can guess why, LOL.
Paper Measurements (complete list of supplies at the bottom of this post)
- Balmy Blue cardstock (7-1/2" x 8-3/4", 1/2" x 2-1/4")
- Storybook Gnomes DSP
- 2 pcs of Pattern 1 (2" x 3-1/2")
- 2 pcs of Pattern 1 (1" x 3-1/2")
- 2 pcs of Pattern 2 (2" x 1")
- 2 pcs of Pattern 2 (1" x 1")
- 1 of the large gnomes from the DSP
Watch the video - it's the best way to figure it out. The directions below, while written to the best of my ability, are NOT intuitive.
Directions (I recommend watching the video and walking through it with me at least the first time-it's so much easier than trying to decipher the written instructions)
- Score on the short side at 2-1/4", 3-1/2", 5-3/4" and 7".
- Rotate paper a quarter turn to the right and score on the long side at 1-1/4" and 6-1/4". FLIP the paper top to bottom and score at 6-7/8" x 7-1/2".
- Flip the cardstock back over and fold over toward you on the second score line from the top (mountain score). Make tick marks on the folded edge at 5/8", 2-7/8", 4-1/8" and 6-3/8".
- Holding the folded edge, cut from the rightmost tick mark to the intersection of the nearest horizontal score and the right edge of the cardstock.
- Moving left, cut up on the next vertical score line just until you hit the horizontal score line, then cut from the tick mark to it's left up to the end of this previous cut. Repeat the rest of the way across the folded edge.
- Cut the last little square off completely, mitering the edge of the tab that remains
- Rotating the cardstock so the opposite edge is nearest, remove the small rectangle on the right, mitering the tab edge as before.
- Cut up each vertical score line until you meet a horizontal score line. Miter the edges of the square flaps that you've just created (not the rectangular ones, just the two small square ones).
- Fold and burnish on the other mountain score (next to previous fold), then fold and burnish on the parallel score lines (valley scores).
- Opening up the cardstock, fold on that first score line at the top (where the three close parallel lines are), then rotate a quarter turn. Fold and burnish on all remaining score lines.
- Apply Tear & Tape to the long, skinny rectangular tab. Remove backing and fold opposite edge to adhere to tab.
- Fold in side tabs of the bottom of the box, apply glue, fold the back flap onto the side flaps, apply more glue and fold the front flap onto the back flap. Square up the box.
- Apply a small amount of glue to the tab on the other end and form the top of the box. Slide the top up and down several times to make the mechanism work smoothly.
- Adhere the DSP to the sides of the box.
- Die cut or fussy cut the gnome and add him to the box front with dimensionals.
- Add rhinestones, if desired.
- Stamp sentiment in Night of Navy ink on small Balmy Blue cardstock and adhere to the front of the box.
